SmugMug review

Not quite a rival to Flickr but good none-the-less

Our Verdict

A great option for those looking for something a little bit more special than Flickr but it's not cheap and there is no free option

For

  • Great interface
  • Nice looking galleries
  • Good editing options

Against

  • Not quite a rival to Flickr
  • Expensive in comparison

Unlike Flickr, Smugmug doesn't offer a free service, it doesn't have much in the way of extras, its community is marginal and its cheapest account is almost twice the price of a Flickr Pro account. Also, it has a silly name.

However, it's still one of the best photo stores out there, not least because of its fantastic-looking galleries, speed and extremely easy ways to crop, reorder and sort your images.

Images are displayed large and in excellent quality, making the service's default gallery easily the best-looking out there.

More advanced features include video storage and the ability to keep your RAW files along with the JPEG versions that are displayed. You can also customise your galleries, share (short) video clips and even sell your photographs.

All of this requires extra payments, however, whether through an upgraded account or a fee per picture. All this makes for a service that won't be for everyone, but is still a fine choice if you take your image collection seriously.
