Most external hard drives are "functional, but". They're useful, but not stylish. The Freecom Hard Drive Sq is different though.

A neat, inexpensive hard disk docking system that makes us go all nostalgic

Having gone to the trouble of fitting both eSATA and USB connections to this hard drive, Freecom has evidently decided to keep the cost down by cutting back on the capacity. Whereas many competing manufacturers are shipping 750GB or 1TB options, you can currently only purchase this drive in 400GB or 500GB editions.

With award-winning and rugged good looks, the not-too inventively named Freecom Hard Drive has a tough aluminium case that not only looks great, but also dissipates heat very readily.

At £19, the Freecom USB DataCard is far from a serious investment. The design is simple and impressive - it's considerably thinner than OCZ's Mega Kart, meaning you really wouldn't feel the girth bulging out your wallet.

Weighing in at just 175g, the FHD-2 Pro is also impressively slimline, measuring 127 x 79 x 15mm. Attractively finished in aluminium casework, the only protuberance is an illuminated button towards the rear
