AMD promises performance and efficiency from this low-power quad-core chip.

It's been a long time coming. But AMD has finally has a decent quad-core chip. Launched today in Opteron server trim, AMD's new 45nm microarchitecture is far from revolutionary. But it makes for an excellent server CPU and also bodes well for upcoming desktop derivatives.

It's a common aphorism that two heads are better than one, but can it be said that four cores are really better than two?

We’d all feel a little better about AMD’s current chips if it wasn’t for the name. You call your processor ‘Phenom’ and, frankly, people expect a phenomenon. When it isn’t one, the sting is all the harsher. It’s like finding out a guy called Steve Massive is only five foot six.

Put yourself in AMD's shoes. Things haven't been going to plan. Your crucial quad-core chip arrived late, ran slow and had a nasty little hardware bug. What's more, you're being beaten silly by Intel's Core 2 processors. What do you do? How about a triple-core chip to distract attention from the mess you're in?

In simple terms, there are two routes to processor performance. Either crank up the clockspeeds or build an architecture that can crunch lots of instructions in a single clock cycle. Unfortunately for AMD, the new Phenom falls flat on both counts.

Since the launch of Intel's first quad-core desktop processor over a year ago, there's been a conspicuous hole in AMD's product line up. But those days are over. Phenom, AMD's crucial new quad-core desktop chip, has finally arrived

    AMD athlon 64 x2 6000+ review

This is as good as it gets for AMD in the mainstream, but previously we've given it a smack, due to a £300+ pricetag. With it now showing up as low as £115 online - a tenner more than the 400MHz slower 5200 - a public flogging is no longer in order

Unlike the 4600 and 3800 below them, the 5200 and upwards haven't chucked a meg and a half of cache over the edge in a desperate attempt to lose cost-weight. This still carries a full 2MB of L2.

    AMD athlon 64 x2 4600+ review

AMD's fallen upon hard times lately: this sub-£70 chip went for £120 just three short months ago, for a start. The better news is that, with Core 2's high-end action largely revolving around quad core, the 4600+ hasn't slipped in the rankings any
