Wireless 3G, Mobile Broadband… there are an ever-increasing number of names for constantly being connected. REVIEW: Western Digital's place in the hard disk market isn't really arguable; it's a company that almost never fails to impress, whether it's inside or outside of your PC. The MyBook and WorldBook have built it a solid reputation among external drive aficionados, and the Raptor and Velociraptor internal drives - running at 7200 and 10,000 rpm respectively - are some of the world's fastest.

Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems – the supplier of just about everything technical at Jack Bauer’s CTU (and don’t we know it) – has released the first official Media Center extenders in the UK (Xbox 360-excepted) and the DMA2200 is unique in that it also contains an upscaling DVD player.

An HD Ready media player, the compact Linux-based MX-780HD can store media locally on a self-installed HDD. This isn’t included, but FAT32/NTFS-formatted drives of up to 1 terabyte in size are supported.

As its name suggests, this is a fast Gigabit Ethernet NAS drive, based on a single SATA II hard drive in capacity choices ranging from 250GB to 750GB. Iomega do actually make a 1TB version of the drive as well, but this includes two hard disks with RAID options, at about twice the price.

The uncommonly quiet-running Freecom Network Drive Pro makes the most of the cooling properties of its stylish aluminium case for reduced fan speed and noise. Features such as soft shut-down after a selected number of hours make the drive even more eco-friendly and easy to live with, and initial setup is simplicity itself.

Available in capacities of between 1TB and 2TB, this drive is about twice the price of most rivals, but then it does include two hard drives rather than one.

This Freecom device is a rather unique NAS drive and comes complete with a built-in wireless router, making it a good option if you don't have a wireless router already.

Home Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices are at last becoming sleek enough for people to want to use in their home. Netgear has worked wonders with this tidy-looking 500GB device, which can be expanded to 1TB.

With the move to smaller sub-notebooks such as the Asus Eee PC, HP Mini-Note and the MSI Wind, there's now a much more realistic demand for internet access on the move

The iPhone has proved a point: we love being connected to the internet wherever we are, and whenever the fancy or the need strikes us. And the only way that we can do that reliably is to connect to the mobile phone network
