NEC is best known for making rather sombre but efficient business machines and, on firstappearances,the Versa S9100 (£1291 inc. VAT) follows the same design philosophy. This rather understated ultraportable has a simple design that looks rather boxy and compact. It may lack the design flourishes we’ve come to expect from the Toshiba Portégé R500 or Sony VAIO TX Series, but we liked the look and feel of this laptop.
With a lightweight chassis, matt screen and a choice of Windows XP Professional or Vista Business, the NEC Versa S970 is a laptop intended for corporate use. The 14.1-inch screen is a standard TFT panel. Without a glossy coating, colours appeared slightly subdued. It's one of the best laptops to use out on the road, however, where reflections and dust remain hidden.
Updated With a conservative, but functional design, standard TFT display and Windows XP Professional, NEC's Versa P570 (£784 inc. VAT) is aimed firmly at the corporate market. It's a semi-portable machine, weighing in at 2.9kg. Although it's possible to take on short journeys, it's a little heavy for the daily commute.
