Logitech has firmly ensconced itself in the world of AV through its Harmony universal remote series and, to a lesser effect, its iPod docks.

So following on from the PDA-style king of the range, the Harmony 1000, this is a more conventional-looking controller which borrows some of the elements of its older sibling to great effect.

While it contains buttons along the shaft, the small, full-colour LCD display at the top is touchscreen, allowing you to access functions, such as one-hit 'Activities', by scrolling through a graphical menu.

The remote learns control codes via Logitech's own web database, accessible using a PC or Apple Mac. There are currently command setups for over 5,000 individual bits of kit.

Highs:

The touchscreen responds to electrical pulses in your fingertips rather than purely touch, allowing for the LCD screen to be more durable. A must if you've got kids in the house.
Setup, through the included PC/Mac software, is easy. Can control up to 15 devices, and they can all be setup into 'Activities', where one button press will switch on the TV, receiver and Blu-ray player, for example.

Lows:

A PC or Mac and an internet connection are essential. With an enormous amount of advanced customisation on offer, you can find yourself mucking up its setup and having to perform a hard reset. Not all codes work first time, and may need fine-tuning and fiddling about with.

1.For Efficient touch screen, great ergonomics, stylish, durable, codes for over 5000 devices on Logitech's database / Against Very fiddly and time consuming setup process

After collecting around 7 remotes, I was in need of downsizing. Aside from creating a "megatron" (for all you Peep Show fans out there), the other, and more subtle option was a universal remote. It takes a good while to unwrap the remote from its box, as Logitech are clearly taking liberties with their packaging, an issue which will aggrevate the environmentalists. Software installation from the attached CD was easy. The first step of setup is to tell the software which components you have. This was relatively easy due to my uber-geek knowledge of model numbers on all my equipment. Further on in the setup you have to set scenarios or "activities" of how you wish your remote to power and function your equipment, e.g. on the "Watch DVD" activity, you set it up thusly: set the TV to on and input HDMI1, receiver to on switched to Video 1, and DVD player to be switched on and play. Int theory, this is great. However, due to the tricky set-up process and endless tweaks available, and sometimes necessary,, I am still having trouble getting every activity 100% right. Even after contacting Logitech directly, and letting them tweak my setup online, updating my remote after this still did not procduce the desired results. Logitech suggest that setup takes around 30 minutes. I've had the remote for little over a month now, and am still tweaking to get things right. Still, despite all this and assuming I finally crack my problem and set up all activities correctly, the remote has the potential to be very good indeed. If the activity does not work initially, you can press the "Help" button which is featured on the remote itself, which will then attempt to fix the problem then and there by asking you simple questions such as "Is the TV on?" and "Is the TV on now?" after pressing no initially. I'm going to dedicate this weekend to really get to grips with the set-up process, as my One is lying somewhat dormant at the moment, and after paying upwards of £100 for a remote, I'm...
