Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 has very quickly become its fastest-selling operating system in the company's history, with 150 million licenses already sold since last October's launch.
This equates to seven copies of Windows 7 being sold every second since launch in October, as a post by Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows Team Blog points out.
Windows 7 should overtake Vista in market share within the next few months, according to analysts. However, Windows XP – launched way back in 2001 – still has a whopping 58 per cent share of the total operating system market.
Businesses finally upgrade from XP
Much of the sales of Windows 7 is likely to come from businesses that have been using XP for the last few years, having chosen to not upgrade to Microsoft's much-maligned Vista.
"Of course people continue to be excited about the features and benefits of Windows 7, and the PCs that our partners are delivering for Windows 7," notes LeBlanc.
"One of the things that people love about Windows 7 is how seamlessly it works with Windows Live, our free apps for sharing, photos, movies and communication," he adds, taking the opportunity to remind us that the latest beta versions of the new Messenger, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker and Sync are now available to try out.
Windows Live beta tests
Microsoft has also recently announced that the latest Windows Live Essentials apps are now in the public beta testing phase.
If you want to get involved in testing out the latest Windows Live apps then you can head over to the Windows Live Team on Inside Windows Live to find out how to get started.
"Together, the new Windows Live Essentials combine the power of the PC and the reach of the cloud to enhance the Windows 7 experience," LeBlanc concludes.
"The way people connect and share with each other continues to shift toward the cloud and we recognise that. The PC continues to be the hub for important activities such as managing email, organizing photos, watching movies and listening to music. What the new Windows Live Essentials does is blends together the best of the PC with the best of the cloud."
