UPDATE: We've now published our full, in-depth iPod nano 16GB review
We're at Apple's "It's only rock and roll event" - here are are first impressions of the brand-new fifth-generation iPod nano with video, FM radio and built-in pedometer. It's available in 8 and 16GB. UK pricing is £115 and £135 respectively.
We really like the new 5G model - it's amazing what Apple has managed to squeeze into the same size enclosure as before. The killer feature is video - and the nano has trumped its big brother the touch in getting video. Everybody thought that both models would get a camera, but instead it's the nano that triumphs.

The new player has a larger 2.2-inch screen, though you'll be hard-pushed to see the difference with the old model.

In terms of shooting video, the new nano adds an integrated mic and speaker as well as the camera itself integrated thus:

Here's the camera roll menu...

The coolest bit of the camera is the real-time effects such as Thermal, Film Grain, Kaleido and X-Ray.This was demoed to great effect by our enthusiastic host, although don't expect miracles - these are just fun little effects.

The integrated pedometer and Nike+iPod features also integrate seamlessly....

There's also a built-in FM radio with live pause and iTunes Tagging - this lets you 'tag' a song you like and then buy it when you sync the nano with iTunes. There was no FM signal where we were in the demo room, but the tagging feature is unfortunately only available in the US at the moment.

The improved player comes in nine brilliant colours including silver, black, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, red and pink. The anodised aluminium finish looks quite spectacular - brighter than previous generations.

Apple says the new nano provides up to 24 hours of music playback or five hours of video playback on a single charge.

6. "issues such (as) cost, space deficiency and battery longevity."
I also think it has something to do with the whole 'Youtube Culture'."
Do you mean the one that cameras like the Flip, Vado and others have been taking advantage of for a couple of years? or do you mean the one that mobile phones near enough the same size have been taking advantage of for longer?

5. I think they didn't put a still camera in because they knew people would be expecting a flash to accompany it and that adds issues such cost, space deficiency and battery longevity.
I also think it has something to do with the whole 'Youtube Culture'.

4. Strange that the Classic has moved 'back' to its 160GB size...
They originally removed it because the 120GB represented a better size/space tradeoff. Are 160GB 2.5" HDDs now as small as the 120GB models or is the old, larger chassis coming back.
Personally, I'd have thought moving back to 80GB and reducing costs further would have been best, but then I've barely half-filled my 80GB Classic :)

3. really odd update. Definitely one for the kids I think. It's well known that most people want to take photos on the fly, not video.

1. Wow, the highlight of the event, a 5 year old video camera taken from a nokia stuffed into a nano.
Great that they are keeping the best ipod ever though, the Classic.
