Samsung has stated that it doesn't believe that the Apple iPad is stronger in any area than the forthcoming Galaxy Tab.
Speaking at a recent mobile question and answer session, Samsung's head of product planning, WP Hong said that he 'didn't see any features [on the Galaxy Tab] that were weaker than the Apple iPad.'
"Its advantages are: communications features, something we have that doesn't exist in the iPad, and we expect consumers to enjoy video chat.
Lighter is better
"In terms of weight, consumer research tells us that a [lighter] weight is very critical to enjoy the experience."
This is a good thing for Samsung, seeing as the Galaxy Tab is almost half as heavy as the iPad.
"When you want to send a message, one finger operation is very important. In addition, Android fundamentally has access to many applications that Google are providing, in addition to what Samsung is planning too, such as on the media and music experience.
"But the most important thing for the Galaxy Tab is portability. It has the capability to support voice, so wherever or whenever you are you can make a call."
Living room device
DJ Lee, mobile global sales and marketing added that other tablets on the market (ie only Apple's) lack portability:
"Previous tablets are seen more as 'living room devices', because people are putting them on a table or on their lap, and have to use two hands to hold.
"This means their device is defined as living room, where ours is on the go."
There may be a key difference in terms of strength between the iPad and Galaxy Tab, though – if the rumoured £600+ tag comes for Samsung's tablet then Apple will have a big advantage over its Korean rival.
And Samsung will be hoping we forget the time that it said that the (then new) Jet is a 'better handset than the iPhone.'

8. To win this they need super agressive pricing. At the end of the day, regardless of what they say this device will cost absolutely nowhere near £600 to make, in fact its probaly less than £100 if not then a little more.

7. Superior tech specs won't win this war. Apple's "lifestyle" adverts and the hype are pushing the iPad off the shelves. I can't see Samsung doing as well in this respect, at least not in the west.
I agree price should be nearer £400 - maybe £500 since it has 3G built in. £600 for a physically smaller device, however much that improves portability, will not help sell the device. If it was a 10" screen £600 would be spot on.

6. If £600 is the real price, It would probably be the worse piece of tech marketing ever. I was interested in the tab but anything more than £400 I don't think I'll entertain the idea. Come on Samsung stick it to Apple

4. @nitebot history is not the best source to judge here. Think technology. I have been a user of iPhone and Galaxy S and iPad and Galaxy Tab are sharing the OS of those handsets and in my opinion with Android as the OS Samsung just got it right this time round. You are absolutely right about Tocco but that was before Samsung decided to play with Android. Things have changed and except for price their is no other dampner here.
@slaguru - the drink will be "Android Success" and am sure Samsung CEO has nearly done what you asked...;-p

3. Whilst this is the most convincing tablet I've seen since the iPad, it's going to be nowhere near as successful. I recall when Samsung brought out the Tocco soon after the original iPhone - I bought one. It's spec was superior on paper but it was nowhere near as good to use.

2. Aside from the other benefits (USB etc), the form factor and weight is far more conducive to reading in the bed or on holiday, as ideal for sticking in ones pocket/case.
If the price point is correct and Samsung market the product properly, they should do very well.

1. I want some of what Samsung have been drinking.
I wonder if any of them would bet their house on the Samsung outselling the iPad.
