'Real' Google phone may be on its way

Can the Big G be bored with other efforts already?

Google planning own phone... again?

The rumours that Google is developing its own branded hardware are gathering pace, after word of a prototype leaked out.

Gizmodo is quoting a 'trusted source' who states that the phone has already been constructed in an early prototype, developed by Google and running a fancy version of Android.

While Google would obviously be using the best version of Android, the source is also stating that the OS used on the likes of the HTC Hero and Moto Milestone isn't the 'real' Android.

Android lessons

This means that whatever the Google phone brings, it will likely be a lot more functional than that which we've seen so far, with a lot of the lessons learnt on the way taken on board.

It will apparently have a larger screen as well, continuing the trend the HTC HD2 and Toshiba TG01 have blazed of large-screened, media friendly devices.

The next stage is ramping up the number of prototypes according to the source, so we'd estimate it will be at least six months before spy shots start appearing.

We're hopeful that Google's gPhone will be announced every year around June - giving Apple something to think about when telling the world that it has added a one per cent faster processor to the 'new' iPhone.

11. @scottgilbert How on earth do you know which PC is in your library? looks like you've been casing the joint, and you call me a thief ;)

In order to beat the criminals, you have to think like one. Hence why I wear a stripey jumper and carry a swag bag at all times.

8. @scottgilbert But your library has a whacking great PC working to do the processing work - mobiles aren't anywhere near that slick yet.

Plus (I'm guessing here) the speed at which you enter your library is probably a bit slower than many would accept for a mobile phone unlock.

Perhaps as a release for 'sleep mode' might work, as thieves wouldn't be able to use the phone after a while. But anything more than 1/3 second for unlocking annoys people beyond belief.

7. What on earth does "the real android" mean? I'm guessing:

1. It's a heavy customised version with lots of "Google Stuff"

2. Or simply a new version

4. If they were everywhere... no - but if I'm a common thief I see a phone and nab it - I'll assess its value afterwards :)

But totally think biometrics are the future - we just need to get them to a point when they're as easy to use as menu, *.

3. thanks for the kind comments gareth, im thinking of a fone that is not traded in again in 18-24months hence the capacity and capability of the fone to out last current fashion trend.

lastly would you nick a fone that had a thumb scanner?

2. @scottgilbert I totally agree on the TG01 - it is **** - however the HD2 is certainly not on the negative side - it's just the WM element that lets it down. But even that isn't that bad.

The point is the trend (be it well used or not) is for larger screens and that's likely where Google will be going.

I like your ideal phone suggestion - although 128GB? Surely that's a bit unnecessary as it would drive the price through the roof.

And a thumb scanner... unless these could be speeded up for unlocking I think it's a bit of overkill.

But you're right - if anyone is going to get this right it's Google.

1. I believe techradar need to read the previous reviews as the TG01 is classified as "****" and HD2 has mixed reviews but borderline on the negative side, so i like to think a company that makes a few pennies has learnt a few lessons on what to do in making a decent handset.

What spec. should google go for and let keep it real.

128GB of storage minimum -to be expanded

1Ghz Snapdragon chipset’s dual processing cores

512mb RAM

3D Dedicated Graphic card

8.0-megapixel camera for enabling video conferencing

LED flash zenon

HSDPA, GPS, Wi-Fi 3G internet - Access to internet anywhere

QWERTY laser keyboard

Multimedia - divx, omv, avi, mp3/4, flash

Built in projector with loud (not tinny) speakers

oled screen 4.5" - 800 x 600 multi touch, with Scratch Shield

Long life battery

Accelerometer

Proximity sensor

Ambient light sensor

a switch to turn on the thumb scanner for switching on fone to work. (must be setup at network shop)

3.5mm headphone jack

easy access to sim card and battery

embedded social networking and YouTube and BBC iPlayer

What have i missed?

Fill the market place with applications people want and make no profit (google that is, not programmers).
