WiMAX hopes to take Wi-Fi to the next level

A US-based satellite advocacy group has released a report (PDF link) claiming to show that WiMAX can affect the quality of satellite reception.

Research carried out by the Satellite Users Interference Reduction Group (SUIRG) found that 3.5GHz fixed wireless/WiMAX solutions caused “significant problems” to the reception of satellite broadcasts in the C-Band frequency for up to 20km away from the WiMAX base station.

While the report does highlight a legitimate concern, it’s important to note that a) the body behind the report is a satellite advocacy group, and b) there is no 3.5GHz WiMAX in the US. Both Sprint and Clearwire operate on a 2.5GHz licence.

1. There is 3.65GHz WiMAX in the U.S.

http://zing.naviciti.com/ is a free tool that we are working on to help operators avoid interference.

Directions:

1. Once the page has loaded, type in a United States Zipcode, city name or GPS cord into the search bar, then the web app will drill down to that specific region.

2. Then navigate and confirm your proposed site.

3. Then go up to the map controls at the top an select "show radius" (be patient the polygons are a bit heavy"

4. Then using the zoom out button, for as many clicks as needed , you can begin to see where the proposed site is in relation to the Ground based Satellite operators in the area.

5. Then you can mouse over the the FSS Satellite Operator or Operators that cover your proposed deployment and get their Name on Contact info to start your negotiations.

6. Once you have Identified the Ground Based Satellite Operators in your area and copied their contact info, you will need to talk with them about their foot print as it may not cover the entire 150Km

7. Good Luck!

We need help compiling the FSS operators names and contact info...
