Hackers aim wrath at Scientology practises

Anonymous group declares war on Scientology

February 7th 2008 | Tell us what you think [ 3 comments ]

A group of anonymous hackers has declared war on controversial religion Scientology. The religious group, which many prefer to refer to as a cult, has previously been targeted by the group, with many scientology sites crashing in the US and UK as a result.

Sunday 10th February has been chosen as the day to launch a protest against Scientology, with the ‘Anonymous’ group aiming ultimately to destroy the religion completely, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Church of Scientology is a hierarchical religious organisation, invented by the science fiction author L Ron Hubbard. Followers have many questionable beliefs, including the idea that aliens might be interfering with life on Earth.

Threat from Anon.

Controversy abounded recently when a video of actor Tom Cruise, speaking about his Scientology beliefs, was posted on YouTube. The Church of Scientology asked YouTube to take the video down, which eventually it did. YouTube's assent angered many anti-Scientology groups.

"Anonymous has therefore decided that your organisation should be destroyed, for the good of your followers, for the good of mankind, and for our own enjoyment," the Anonymous group says in a YouTube promo video.

"We shall proceed to expel you from the internet and systematically dismantle the Church of Scientology in its present form. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us," it says ominously.

Whatever the plan is, you can expect that many high profile Scientology sites will experience at least some disruption from Sunday 10th February.

2. Thank you for your interest in the situation.

As a favor to TechRadar.com and its readers, though, I'd like to make a bit of a correction to the information contained in this article (even though cassandra9 already beat me to it, it bears repeating):

The 10th of February is to be a day of global, peaceful protests IRL (In Real Life), not further attacks on CoS websites. Anonymous opposes illegal activity; anyone claiming otherwise is either misinformed or seeking to cause trouble.

Anyone who would like to find out more about this is very much welcome to visit http://www.enturbulation.org/

This invitation applies as much to individuals as it does to the media; we have a whole board dedicated to questions from the media, as well as a large amount of information in general about Scientology, Anonymous, and the planned protests.

Cassandra9 also raised another important point which, I think, cannot be repeated enough:

Anonymous bears no ill-will to the followers of Scientology, nor do we have any nefarious plans to go against their beliefs.

Anonymous simply opposes the -practices- of the "Church" of Scientology; the establishment itself.

Thank you for your time,

- Anonymous

1. Wow, that was some sloppy researching. May I correct some statements?

1. The aim to crash Scientology sites is not 'for a day', it is for a period necessary to gain satisfaction and media attention. The sites were down for a couple of days.

2. The article implies, that anonymous has issues with Scientology's 'controversial' beliefs. That is not correct. Anonymous is protesting against the cults _practices_, like disconnection from family and friends, systematical brainwashing, including love-bombing, harassment of ex-members and critics, suspicious deaths, exploiting members physically and financially, illegal operations, being a health-threat to its members, their totalitarian, agressive expansionist regime and so on. Whoever wants to believe in thetans is free to do so, but don't scam people. Religion should be free.

3.(personal editor's nitpick)You might want to search for synonyms to 'controversial'.

4. FEB 10 FOCUSES ON REAL LIFE PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS, NOT SOME REHASHED HACKING SCHEME. THE GOAL IS TO RISE AWARENESS.
