The worst kind of public relations is to attempt to point out the flaws of your competitors, instead of concentrating on promoting your own strengths.
Sony has been shockingly guilty of committing this PR sin at CES 2009, issuing a press release pointing out the weaknesses of Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, in comparison with the (admittedly) feature-rich PlayStation 3.
"Sony sent out a press release that attempted to set the tone of the console debate," wrote Wired's gaming correspondent Chris Kohler this week, adding, hilariously: "Apparently this year's tone will be "crazy ex-girlfriend"."
PS3 sales down
The reality of the situation is that PS3 sales dropped in the US in November, compared with the same month in 2007 and, as Kohler points out, with "a $200 entry-level Xbox 360 attracting price-conscious shoppers, Sony is gearing up to take a beating in December, January, and beyond.
"So out comes the spin. First, a Sony exec tells CNET that PlayStation 3 sales were up 130% following Black Friday, which is somehow supposed to be a sign of health even though sales of every product on Earth jump after Black Friday."
And if that wasn't enough of a PR boo-boo, Sony then issue a CES press release listing those features that its competitors don't offer in their consoles out of the box. Specifically:
· Built in Blu-ray drive for HD movies and mind-blowing games
· Built in Wi-Fi for wireless gaming and Internet access
· Huge hard drives for storing games, movies, music photos and more
· Free online gaming and entertainment access through PSN
· Ten year's of value with a future-proof system via firmware updates that offer new services and features
Sony's release continues: "The Xbox 360 and Wii offer a set of features in their own right. However, when you take a look at the feature offerings side by side, there is only one true winner in delivering total value and price."
Crazy ex-girlfriend Sony
The console manufacturer then offers journalists the handy feature comparison chart you can see to the right here.
Then Sony makes the fundamental mistake, stating: "The Xbox 360 requires additional money, multiple upgrades and additional external devices, putting a burden on the wallet and adds clutter to the entertainment center. And the Wii's lack of enhanced features comes at the expense of a comprehensive entertainment solution. So as PS3 continues to evolve without the need for additional parts or expenses, expect the competition to continue peddling add-ons in an effort to keep up with the Jones'.
Or, as Wired has it: "In other words: what does she have that I don't?!"

12. PS3- advantage: blu-ray player
disadvantage: most expensive, i can't notice any graphic difference between it and xbox 360 and the wii
Xbox 360 - advantage: cheaper, more "gamer" games than the Wii
disadvantage: have to pay for multiplayer gaming
Wii - advantage: very innovative control system, cheap
disadvantage: not many features or games "for gamers", etc, fable 2, gears of war, metal gear solid
see, every console has its advantages and disadvantages, just buy whichever one you prefer

11. Wow, you should be a sony sales rep. You just pointed out some of the PS3's coolest features. I love my PS3, ive had one since a few weeks after launch, a 20gig hdd. It has never given me an ouce of trouble and I'm a hardcore gamer. In my opinion its one of the best electronics hardware out there right now, and u can even play awesome games on it. I've replaced the 20hdd with a 320hdd myself for $100.00. It's the best blue-ray, and upconverting player on the market. You can surf the web. Oh and PSN i free and it offers a lot of great content. Every one I know has a PS3 and loves it. Nuff said for now

9. I should add something relevant to the discussion I guess. It's fair enough to hit out at Sony for the price point. In light of competition prices it is a bit expensive but on value for money, there is more than meets the eye. We shall see this year if they chose to but they've made it pretty clear in the media that they don't intend on lowering the cost.
Everything just needs to be taken in context. One statement on one day of a long journey in gaming. Enjoy your day. :)

7. "Microsoft though know how to look after their customers - with the original Xbox there was a chance it could catch fire, Microsoft offered everyone with an Xbox a replacement PSU, and the red ring of death - Microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years. I'd really love to see Sony do that."
As far as I'm aware there is no major problem with the PS3 so the 1 year standard warranty is sufficient. Its nice to have a new Xbox every few months but after your 5th the novelty wears off. Im on my 6th now, second Elite unit. I should have mentioned that in my previous comment. Maybe I should add the time for me to box it up, send it back, and wait for delivery to the cost of ownership. Not to mention back up /restore.
Microsoft admitted to the red ring of death problem but instead of fixing it extended the warranty. They say they've fixed it now, but it still happens. I sold my repaired 360 to buy an Elite which was suppose to be cured only for that to fail!
To bring up another point with reference to elandyll comment. Steve Ballmer said in his keynote they now have 14million XboxLive subscribers. You work out £40 x 14million. Shocking! They could certainly drop the price especially for people renewing year after year. Or look at it another way, look how much revenue Sony/PSN is loosing out on.

6. It is NOT ABOUT bashing Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo unnecessarily, it is about pointing out when any of these companies is trying to present facts in such a way as to obfuscate or hide the truth.

5. Wait.
So PR Spins from MS are a-ok, you repeat them, embelish them, and even make those for them if need be, but if Sony gets finally to fight back, they are on "crazy ex-girlfriend" mode?
I didn't see you point out the obvious when MS was clamoring 28million units WW vs 20million for the PS3 (both number are false, it's lower than that), which is that Sony's PS3 has sold more per year on average than the 360...
3 years of 360: 28 million
2 years of PS3: 20 million
See my point?
I also do not see kudo points to Sony for selling what should be close to 900k units (if the 130% holds true) in December, when having a console at $399 in our economic times...
But I forget, the Sony bashing season is in full swing (it's pretty much been the case since the release of the PS3), so I must be terribly out of touch with reality I guess.
Do not let me disturb the "trendy thing to do", please carry on...

4. I went for Xbox 360 when Sony messed up in Europe and annoyed us all (yeah remember that one Sony - give America and Japan the PS3 first at Christmas, but not the Europeans, and also ban all Europeans from importing the PS3 - wasn't really a very good marketing decision - mind you Sony are always annoying the Europeans, I don't think they see Europe as a vital place to sell consoles - the PSP - delayed in Europe, the white PSP - delayed in Europe, and then the PS3 - delayed till after Christmas IN EUROPE!! What were they thinking?).
In addition to this Sony screwed Europe even more by removing the backwards compatibility from the PS3, which both the 360 and Nintendo Wii both CAN do!!
The only bad things I've found with the 360 have been the paying for Xbox Live and having to buy a Wi-Fi adapter.
Microsoft though know how to look after their customers - with the original Xbox there was a chance it could catch fire, Microsoft offered everyone with an Xbox a replacement PSU, and the red ring of death - Microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years. I'd really love to see Sony do that.
There is a few improvement Microsoft could make to improve the 360 such as stop overcharging for the Wi-Fi adapter. I chose not to buy the Microsoft Wi-Fi adapter, I bought a Ethernet to Wi-Fi bridge at £25 which was far cheaper than Microsoft's equivalent, and possibly the biggest mistake which really caused the demise of HD-DVD would be to include a Blu-Ray drive (it's too late for HD-DVD now) in certain versions of the 360.
Microsoft do have a severe advantage over PS3 with that, Microsoft could produce two versions of the 360 - one with Blu-Ray, Wi-Fi and XBox Live for 12 months all in one pack at a similar price to the PS3, and the other without all those features as a low-cost entry level console. But PS3 are unable to do this as all the games are on Blu-Ray discs so to just make a cheap scaled down entry level PS3 without Blu-Ray would mean re-releasing all the games.
In addition to all this on the 360 you are able to develop your own games, where as Sony have locked all this fun down (they did the same stupid thing with the PSP, where as the DS unofficially allows homebrew - and I really don't think Nintendo care that much about stopping the R4 as people are buying their console over Sony's as they can play homebrew games on it!), preventing productivity and new ideas from being launched on PS3. Sony really need to start seeing that people are fed up of being locked into things with media that they have purchased and are starting to revolt, and choosing the non-DRM stuff over the protected stuff - even iTunes have finally realised this, although it took Amazon MP3 store to make them see the light - which is probably now too late as they now have a very powerful competitor.

3. I think the comparison chart is good. I've seen a more detailed one than that on some other web site. I think Sony has a point and is not acting like a 'crazy ex girlfriend'. My Xbox has cost me more to buy and run for 3 years than my PS3 for 18 months. The Blu-ray is fantastic, PSN works just as good as XboxLive. The Xbox has more games but not especially anything I want. A few more of my friends have an Xbox because its been out longer and cheaper. But Sony are practically giving it away at the price point its at now!
It would/will be interesting to see:
1) If sales of PS3 go up if they price matched Xbox360 Premium/Elite. A lot of people seem to want a PS3 its just they 'cant afford one'.
2) If Microsoft decide to stick a blu-ray player in the next Xbox having said there's no use for it in a game console. I know I'd miss it when upgrading to the next batch of consoles. Although players will probably be £10 by then :).

2. I think the real concern is that Sony has held back for WAAAAAAY too long on reducing the PS3 price. Here's an idea Sony, you can have this, why not bring the price down to an affordable level and let the WORD OF MOUTH do the rest? Just a thought...

1. What do they have that i dont? Well a reasonable price tag for one thing! PS3's are jut to god damn expensive! I have a Wii and a 360, but the PS3 has just never appealed due to the high price!
