Sony is celebrating today, with news that the PlayStation 3 is now outselling the Xbox 360 by 28 per cent, a complete turnaround from a year ago, when Microsoft's console was way out in lead.
Between June 2009 and 2010, Sony managed to sell 14.3 million PS3s, compared to 10.3 million Xbox 360s sold, according to official figures released by both companies.
The main reason for the role reversal seems to be Sony cutting the price of its console and also offering a slim version.
Testing times
Although Microsoft is still in front when it comes to overall sales of the consoles, this lead has been trimmed significantly to just 3.6 million.
These are interesting times for the two gaming giants. Both are close to releasing motion-sensor gaming (PlayStation Move and Kinect) which should stretch out the life of the consoles and Microsoft has only just released its Slim version of the Xbox 360.
So it is not clear cut that Sony will actually ever overtake Microsoft in terms of console dominance - although it does have an extra card to play and that is 3D gaming.
It will be interesting to see what the next 12 months bring.

19. Genuinely think Sony really have the potential to become something very special, very soon. The number of quality games is thankfully improving, and the Move controller is certainly a much more enticing prospect than Kinect. I'd been holding off an getting a PS3 for a while now (the only console I haven't bought yet), but as soon as the Move bundles come along, I'm on board. Interesting times - as Gibbon has said, it's fantastic that this hardware generation has been such an unpredictable journey. As gamers, we haven't had it this good for a very long time IMO.

18. I think it's an interesting point made about the purchase of PS3s.
Are there figures out there relating to game sales also?
Since that's how the consoles make their money perhaps that should be the marker for success?
Surely the games sold per unit should be used to guage their success? Or would that simply favour the older Xbox? I'm possibly overthinking about this now.
At the end of the day I think it's just quite nice to see some good close competition with the consoles this gen, after 2 generations of undeniable dominance by a single leading console it's refreshing. Although I suppose you could argue that the Wii has done it time time...
Oh and I don't own all the consoles, just an Xbox, but don't hold it against me. ;)

15. I love how all these Xbox fanboys claim to "own all 3 consoles" to try and give their Xbot spin some credence.

14. I am an owner of all 3 consoles. The last game I bought for PS3 was MGS4, it gets used from time to time for playing video files and Blu-Rays thats all. Since I got a WDTV box it hasn't been touched. Xbox 360 is used purely for gaming and it's used loads, Xbox Live is streaks ahead of PSN, the controller is one of the best ever released, perfect fit for most hands. Wii get used by my little sister.
There are a few things that render these figures useless.
1. PS3 has a Blu-Ray, I expect a high % are purchased solely as a BR, I know that's why I got mine, it was the only updateable BR player when it was released. I know this doesn't change the fact that they've still sold them but if there was a way to calculate consoles sold for gaming the PS3 sold figure would be much lower.
2. These results are from June 2009-June 2010. In that period, Xbox suffered market saturation while PS3 released the cheaper slim which helped them sell a tonne. Now that Xbox S has is out, and older models have had their prices heavily reduced, Xbox sales have risen 1000% (http://www.itproportal.com/portal/news/article/2010/7/22/uk-sales-xbox-360-consoles-surge-1000-percent/) even if that figure is not exact, it shows a massive increase in sales, oh an look, it came out just after June 2010 and is therefor not included in these results.
"Following its release in the US after its E3 unveiling last month, stats from VGChartz predict the 360 Slim sold in excess of 250,000 units. Initial UK sales figures for the console suggest it equaled figures from the 360’s original launch back in 2005."
The article above even says 3 million shipped in last 3 months, showing its all to do with price cut and slim console. If they do an August to August the 3.6 million gap will widen to at least 4 million again if not more.

13. I fascinated why the media have only just picked up on this.
PS3 outsold the Xbox by 2.2m units in 2009, it outsold it by 1.5m units in 2008.
Why the sudden Sony love? Is it now unfashionable to hate Sony?

12. I have both consoles, but my Xbox rarely gets used anymore. The Xbox games are pretty much baren and boring these days.
I use my PS3 90% of the time, as the games are better, it's a better media centre, and all my friends are now on PSN too.
As for 3D, Pretty much anyone that's played 3G games will disagree, it's incredibly immersive.

As for attach rates, there is not much difference between PS3 and Xbox these days. Why do you think Valve have suddenly started loving the PS3? Because they see it's still got other 6-7 years life in it, and the Xbox is pretty much over.

11. Well I sold my consoles recently (due to lack of use because of work) but i had the PS3 (original 60Gb) and a Wii, the X-box was a consideration at the time I bought my PS3 but after the RROD fiasco I decided against it. I bought the Wii as a second console instead of an X-box as I found it offered more of a difference then what you get between 360 and PS3, (which essentially offer the same thing to gamers) So I was left with 2 different consoles at home, one for family and one for me.

10. I'd be interesting to see what percentage of users have both 360 and PS3 (I do), and indeed may even have a Wii too. That might be a good indication of how Kinect/Move will fare.
It'd also be interesting to see relative games sales for both consoles. I read somewhere that the PS3 has a low games attachment rate - possibly because a lot of the users are too busy watching BluRay to play games. I know my PS3 gets more media use than actual games use (yay! for PlayTV).

9. I've always been a PS owner, from a PS1 all the way to a PS3 now and I have the original 60GB one (upgraded the HDD to 500GB though).
I always looked at an X-BOX but never made the plunge as it just always felt a tad dated, like you needed to buy a external wireless adaptor or the famous RROD or the fact that it didn't have blu-ray built in.
And now, there is a new one on the market ... has it all except Blu-Ray (to keep the cost down) ... might get one, seriously considering it, but somehow doubt it ... as I want a blu-ray player for the bedroom, so might just get a PS3 Slim.
And sure, you all say 3D is not something you want now, but remember when HD is was for the high end niche market and now you can pickup a HD tv at Tesco ... 3D will be like that, just give it time!

7. Yeah I agree with monkeighy, market saturation is a definite factor. I bought my PS3 when they cut the price of the slim, and mainly for the blu-ray player and a few exclusives (Uncharted). You'll probably find that more than half of gamers probably own both the consoles because this current generation has lasted quite a while, so it's only expected that Sony should eventually catch up and probably be around equal with Microsoft.

6. I'd also add that no gamers I know give a **** about 3D gaming. Buying a new TV and having to buy and wear glasses to see the effect just isn't worth it. Especially if you playing with a group of people, either pass the pad or just multiplayer on the same box is going to suck if not everyone has glasses.

5. I have both console use my xbox for games and sky player use my PS3 for games, bluray and Iplayer.
They work together really well.
A couple of my friends have bought ps3 tho due to there xbox breaking for the 100th time which might account for the gap shrinking.

4. I would hazard a guess that the slowing rate of sale of the Xbox 360 is mainly due to market saturation. Quite simply most people who want an Xbox 360 have already bought one. Whereas the PS3 has only recently dropped in price, which opens it's market up to all of the people who didn't want to pay it's previous high price.
Once Kinect launches pushing the Xbox 360 further into the mainstream I expect sales will pick up again. Especially as they are releasing bundles of Kinect with the new budget Xbox 360.

3. Worth pointing out that the Xbox360 launched 16months earlier than the PS3, which more than accounts for that gap of 3m units (Microsoft sold 9m units before Sony had even got a single console out the door).
I also wonder how many of those Xbox360 are still working, as most of them have surely RROD by now, with a 70% failure rate, even if lots are replaced under warranty, there are many that aren't.
I think it's a safe bet that in REAL terms, there are most PS3 units out there than Xbox consoles.

2. I'm really amazed at the difference in overall sales, it wasn't that long ago it was over 6 million sales separating them.
I'm glad the current consoles continue to do so well, no need for anything new when they are both capable of delivering new experiences
