No Xbox 720 on the way for the foreseeable future, says Microsoft's Robbie Bach

While gamers are already starting to look to the 'next gen' of gaming – and proper virtual 3D gaming and TV being one of THE hot topics at this month's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas – Microsoft has taken the opportunity to say it is NOT working on the next Xbox right now, but is concentrating on improving the Xbox 360 experience.

Microsoft boss Robbie Bach, the company's President of Entertainment and Devices, told the San Jose Mercury News: "Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient."

"The life cycle for this generation of consoles - and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well - is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations," Bach added.

Credit crunch stifling

The Microsoft man also made the connection with the credit crunch, noting that consumers are going to be reticent to make large investments in new hardware for the foreseeable future.

"When you look at consumers, they are going to be more value-conscious," he said Bach.

Sony is sticking to its guns, re-iterating at every given PR opportunity the 'ten year life-cycle' line when promoting its PlayStation 3 console.

5. The 10 year life cycle, what a joke! I'll be in my thirties by the time a new console comes then, then I'll be in my forties for the next console release, you see where I'm going with this one!

I don't care about the credit crunch or the fact that I have less money than normal, I'd still go out and buy the XBOX 720 tomorrow if I could. I'm sure millions of others would too.

I also read countless news reports, that gaming is still just as popular now in the credit crunch as it has ever been.

Modern Warfare 2, look at the sales of that game! Even though it's just a game and doesn't reflect how well a new console would do, it still proves that there's no shortage of customers in the video game market!

I will be very disappointed if I don't see a new console within the next two years, I'm ready now, and no doubt lots and lots of others are too.

1. A console generation is normally 5-8 years, Microsofts original Xbox however launched late and and the 360 launched early so making a short generation for the previous Xbox. Microsoft will of course try to get more life from this generation but its likely theirs will have the greatest improvement.

Wii2: Like with its handhelds expect only a small improvement in power, mainly in ram size and being able to output a HD signal.

PS4: Expect work to fix the PS3's problems rather than a large power boost. More ram and some internal architecture changes.

Xbox720: Expect the largest change, attempt to be the most powerful console of its generation.
