Microsoft has finally announced a release date for its motion-controlled Kinect gaming tech, with the new Xbox 360 peripheral given a UK release date of November 10.
With Xbox arriving on Windows Phone 7 and Kinect going up against not only the dominant Wii, but also Sony's forthcoming Move in the family gaming market, it's going to be a critical time for Microsoft's gaming division.
The UK release date is obviously timed to give consumers plenty of time to pick up the Kinect - priced at £129.99 - ahead of Christmas.
GamesCom reveal
The UK launch comes six days after the November 4 US launch, which was announced back at E3 in June, and is apparently a week ahead of the European launch.
"We are bringing the Kinect experience to Europe for the first time at gamescom because this is the biggest show in the region and we're committed to investing in Europe and the critical role it plays in Xbox's global success," said Microsoft's European Xbox boss, Chris Lewis.
"With Kinect, YOU become the controller, giving you the choice in how you and your friends navigate entertainment and gaming experiences.
"We're already seeing a high level of anticipation in Europe with sales of the Kinect ready Xbox 360 250GB creating an all-time record weekly market share."

16. Designflaw - Don't worry about Smithy, he's Techradar's token *********. He's a complete PS3 fanboy with no hope of being reasonable about anything that he doesn't like.

15. @si_smith I really don't know what your problem is with Kinect. If you don't feel it's for you that's fine, but making false claims and accusing me of lying smacks of desperation.
Since the E3 announcement my contract certainly doesn't prohibit me from telling people I'm working on a game for Kinect.

14. Amusing to read that there was very pronouced lag at the EA event, they showed off the Kinect stuff in the new Harry Potter game and lag was very obvious. Save your money and wait for Kinect2 instead of this half assed rubbish.

13. I'm a games developer, we had a Kinect dev kit, and threw it in the trash it was so laggy.
See how easy it is to claim anything on the interweb.....
Seriously designflaw, if you really had one, you wouldn't be talking about it, as the NDA would mean you would lose your job in an instant.

11. But you have not played it yourself. None of what I played was 'scripted'. Seriously man, your lame bashing of everything Microsoft is getting really old.

10. I'm a games developer and I've been working with Kinect for quite a while now. Over the last 3 months I've played many new works-in-progress and even a finished game.
I can categorically state that lag is definitely not a concern. I've experienced absolutely no noticeable drop in responsiveness in any of the tiles I've played recently.

9. @ibanezlewis I have seen it in real life. And it was a carefully scripted demo with Microsoft stooges pretending to be punters.

8. I didn't ask if you'd seen it... I asked if you've played it. We've all seen the videos showing lag from a few months ago, but as far as I could tell from my encounter with Kinect, that's been ironed out.

7. Just like the iFad etc etc both Move and Kinect will sell immense numbers for what they are, just wait until the final products are out and then post a stupid comment....

6. @ibanezlewis Yes I have seen it, and it was an embarrassing flop.
Most journalists (aside from the hardcore Xbox lovers) have also seen it's flaws on numerous occasions.
The hurdle jumping was virtually impossible due to the lag, which must have been in the region of 2 seconds.

- Handbags please!
I will wat for the over hype surrounding this and the ps3 move to die down before deciding on buying. I must admit from a cynics point of view it looks a little late to the party and desperate to shore up user base. We have both systems in the house and the lads are keen regarding the ps3 move and less so the kinect although maybe once they have tried out it may be different but personally I think Microsoft have over shot with the price - if they had brought it in at say £99 they may have just sold a bucket full but it does seem too much for what it does - just an opinion

4. will need to try this one first but to be honest as I already have the Wii, the Kinect will have to drop in price first.
What Sony and Microsoft are trying is nothing new and the Wii does the job just fine.

3. Have you actually played it si-smith? I used it at Alton Towers yesterday, and it has extremely minimal lag to the point where you don't even notice. And the games are just fun, I'm not bothered about them tacking it onto some core game right now.
I'll be picking this up, because unlike si-moron here, I wait till I try something before passing judgement on it.

2. Still don't think I'll be picking this up - Move will be out next month, which I think will finally convince me to buy a PS3 at long last, so don't think I'll be wanting to spend another £130 on this at all.

1. Looking forward to the Kinect trainwreck to pull into the station. A broken and barely working motion control system with lag and registration problems and a REALLY lousy lineup of games.
Initially of course there will be hype and marketing to cover over any nastyness, but this will soon wear thin and the problems will come to light. I'm sure Microsoft hope they can sell as many units as they can in that time, before it all goes belly up.
