Sony has made the 3.15 version of the PlayStation 3 firmware mandatory, sparking a little confusion in the community.
Previously 3.15 had been a optional upgrade, bringing PSP Minis to the platform but not forced on any users, but Sony has now made the upgrade mandatory.
Fixed?
Suggestions are being made that the reason for this could be either that the next firmware upgrade will need 3.15 in place before it can be functional, or that the upgrade fixed something that wasn't listed in the update changes log.
In truth, there is very little reason not to upgrade, with no reports of stability issues with the voluntary upgrade.
But it does beg the question of just what to expect from the next big upgrade from Sony, and what it will bring to the PS3.

3. It's very easy to miss the notification of new firmware, only to find out when you log on (or don't log on). How is this any different? It's not... It's just silly news day.

2. tbh @mgillespie I didn't know of the firmware upgrade (ie it didn;t automatically prompt me when I turned my PS3), then tried to access the Beatles Rock Band store and was told I had to upgrade before I could log on - that was confusing.

1. I don't see what the confusion is, it's not like it hard to work out.. 3.15 fixes the controller sync, and includes minis support.
If Sony were getting too many support calls over Bluetooth controller sync (which is most likely), or they were getting pressure from Mini developers to push the PS3 Mini support firmware mandatory..
Either way, this is really non-news, and shows how desperate the media are to report on ANY old tripe.
