Some companies are content to slap their logo on a product manufactured by a no-name Taiwanese factory. Others carefully craft their designs, nursing them from initial concept to something proudly stacked on the shelf of an Apple store.

We talk to two such committed companies – equinux, a software developer, and Griffin, which specialises in hardware – to lift the curtain on the part of a product's lifecycle that most of us never see.
