Smashing Pumpkins prefer being single

<>

Overblown rock outfit Smashing Pumpkins have announced that they will no longer be releasing albums, and it's all because of Apple and its pesky iTunes store.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, lead singer Billy Corgan has sounded the death-knell on albums, saying: "We're done with that. There is no point. People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles and skip over the rest."

Ye of little faith, Corgan – nobody would ever do that with the brilliant Siamese Dream, but Zeitgeist on the other hand…

Why are we killing ourselves?

Instead of creating 'arty' tracks for albums (read: fillers), Corgan has decided the good ol' single is the way forward.

"The listening patterns have changed," Corgan laments. "So why are we killing ourselves to do albums, to create balance and do the arty track to set up the single? It's done."

5. hey, how about you do some real reporting. Corgan's comment was in regards to how people don't listen to albums. Not accusing Itunes of being the reason Zeitgeist did poorly. Show me that quote instead of drawing false accusations. His point was that in the world we live today people only listen to singles therefore why do theme based album vs releasing 4 hit songs at a time or whatever have you.

4. I am really disappointed in Billy Corgan. This is a man I've had such hope for. I loved Gish...I loved Siamese Dream. I've got all their 45's all their albums up through Adore. And then...what happened? I don't know. I can understand an artist wanting to experiment and try something new. And there is a whole new landscape out there in the music scene. We will see how this plays out.

I am not a person who loads only the singles. I've never been the biggest fan of the "rawk out" songs that Billy chooses for singles. I like the artsy filler stuff. The beautiful, melodic stuff with the edge. If an artist puts out an album worthy of listening to, the fans won't fast forward through it all. Let's not blame iTunes for it all. I mean maybe the songs should be better.

1. On the average - get your album out due to contract obligations ... I agree ! I thought that their last lp was great start to finish, but the idea of lps I thought was from the artist view "to be a masterpiece". From the label end it was production and rushed timing -- look at all of Elton's past LP releases ... he himself came out and said prodution and timeing was bear to push em ' out. Go for the singles until you have a sure bet ! Wxlvandy@aol.com
