Sony A7s vs A7R vs A7 comparison: our conclusion
Rather than produce a one-camera-fits-all CSC, Sony is building a range of high-end E-mount camera bodies that are designed to appeal to different types of photographer.
The Sony A7s is for users who need high-quality video capture in their workflow, whereas the A7R is for photographers who need to maximise detail and need to make large-size prints - portrait, landscape and still-life shooters.
The Sony A7 represents the obvious choice for people who prefer to photograph active subjects, although even then it's not the fastest focusing camera around.
In terms of Sony A7s competitors, the Panasonic GH4 is the obvious choice.
Panasonic has a strong reputation in the broadcast and film camera world, and, like the A7s, the GH4 combines a small footprint, good build quality and 4K video recording.
While it also adds a touchscreen and higher resolution (16MP), the GH4's native ISO sensitivity is two stops slower than the Sony A7s (topping out at 25,600, compared with the Sony's 102,400).
The most significant difference between the Sony A7s and the Panasonic GH4 is in the shape of the sensor - or rather, its size.
The Panasonic GH4 is a Micro Four Thirds camera, so the sensor is smaller than APS-C.
In comparison, the Sony A7s's full-frame sensor makes it easier to achieve shallow depth of field effects and cinematic bokeh, while its larger pixels should produce a much cleaner picture in low light.
The main sticking point with Sony's A7 line continues to be the lack of E-mount lenses.
Sony is currently developing a new 28-135mm f/4 Power Zoom E-mount lens specifically designed for movie shooting, but there are no pricing or release date details yet.
That said, there are a number of third-party lens adaptors - and indeed Sony's own LA-EA4 A-mount adaptor - that enable you to attach a wide range of lenses to the A7s, A7R and A7.
