YouTube-watchers are always easy to spot in the office.Even if you can't see their screen, if someone is watching a YouTube video you can tell - they look at their monitor with head bentto one side, with a kind of glazed look in their eyes. They look at the screen inthe same way that one might stare at someone else's bookshelf.
I don't get much time to browse YouTube, but when I do, I'malways amazed at the sheer volume of brilliant material that has been uploaded.YouTube provides a window into the world which we would otherwise not have - and that's why it's so important that it stays online and keeps growing.
It's also a great way to save inbox space - we no longer get10MB .wmv files in our email, just YouTube links! Here are ten of my favourite YouTube videos:
Buffalo vs Lions vs Crocodile
A titanic skirmish between a gigantic herd of buffalo, alarge pride of lions and two crocodiles. The lions catch the baby buffalo anddrag it into the river where it's grabbed by the crocodiles. A tug of warensues, and it all ends in unexpected fashion.
Oldy but goody: funny cats
This an old classic. In fact it's so old that it was one ofthose videos which DID do the rounds when email forwards were all the rage.Still, though, it's always worth another look, and if you've never seen it thenall the better.
Awesome 1996 Tango advert...
Do you remember Blackcurrant Tango? This is a fantastictelevision advert from the mid-1990s, brought back to life by YouTube. Withoutthe internet, this bizarre and funny ad would be lost forever.
You Say We Pay: dubbed caller on Richard & Judy...
Richard and Judy play a game on their chat show called 'You Say We Pay'. Adam Buxton (of Adam & Joe fame) has dubbed thecaller's voice and it's very, very funny.
Midget Fight!
This is so bizarre it's almost unreal. The things they canget away with on American TV are crazy. This is an old clip from the JerrySpringer Show where two dwarf love rivals face off with each other and areallowed to physically fight one another.
DISCLAIMER: Tech.co.uk does not condone violence among anymembers of society, not least Dwarfs.
Ice hockey punch up
North American sports have always seemed a bit peculiar tous Europeans. But a sport which seems to consist of big men in body armour, skating around the ice with hockey rackets and fighting each other? Insane, andcaptivating all at the same time.
Charlie Brooker on The Wire
Journalist Charlie Brooker explains why The Wire is thegreatest television show of the last 30 years. I completely agree witheverything he says. The Wire is so good I once almost wet myself just thinkingabout it. Always good to see people promoting works of genius like this.
Civilian truck convoy is ambushed in Iraq
Armed US Army vehicles escort civilian supply trucks throughthe streets of Iraq. But the convoy takes a wrong turn and is set upon by gun-toting locals. The manbehind the camera is shot at, and then his truck breaks down. The US Armyleaves him behind as he witnesses his friend in the truck in front beingmurdered.
TV news girl doesn't realise she's on air
You can't help but chuckle at this. A local TV news girldoesn't realise she's broadcasting to a million people and starts joking abouta colleague's affair. She manages to say pretty much everything out of the 'How to embarrassyourself on live TV' book.
