I'm an unashamed HomePlug fan. I already use an 85Mbit-rated plug-in module to route broadband from a router in the living room through my home's electrical wiring to an Xbox 360 upstairs. Another module gives my Media Center PC the same broadband access, not to mention linking it to the Xbox for video streaming.
While we wait for the IEEE to get its 802.11n act together for super-fast Wi-Fi, HomePlug and other Powerline products provide one of the easiest ways to network your home.
HomePlug advocate Devolo has announced today that its dLAN Homeplug adaptors will be available at PC World stores across the UK. So getting access to Homeplug/Powerline technology for your own digital home will now be even easier.
Powerline technology is arguably a perfect fit for PC World. Installing the adaptors is a simple case of connecting one adaptor to your router and another to the device you want to network. There's no software to install and the network speeds are solid (although about half the rated speed on the box). Unlike Wi-Fi, an electrical network is a secure network - you don't have to worry about anybody peeking at your data.
Tech.co.uk has already reviewed a number of Powerline/HomePlug products. Take a look at some of the reviews below and decide for yourself whether the technology is right for you. Or if you haven't heard about electrical home networking, read our guide here .
