I think I speak for all hardcore home cinema fans in saying that this is the dedicated Blu-ray player the world has been waiting for. Created to deliver the highest possible quality video and audio standards, as well as finally unlocking the forbidden pleasures of BD Live (whatever the heck they might be) via an Ethernet port and local storage, Panasonic's DMP-BD50 appears to offer it all.

Having ridden the coat-tails of Sony's PlayStation 3 to format victory, Blu-ray finds itself at a crossroads. With studio moguls now convinced that Blu-ray is where the cash is at, hardware manufacturers finally believe that the format could catch fire. All are eager to sideline their first generation of BD players (with incomplete spec and ill-judged Java compatibility), and usher in a new wave of altogether more sophisticated kit.

We previously reviewed the DMR-EX87, an HDD/DVD recorder with a mighty 250GB capacity. Clearly, not everyone needs such a large hard disk, and its for these users that Panasonic has come up with this 160GB version, which costs a good £150 less

When we tested Panasonic's original Blu-ray player, the DMP-BDP10, we were blown away by its hi-def picture and PCM sound quality. This version is physically identical to its predecessor but has been upgraded

For various reasons, high definition discs have arrived with more of a whimper than a bang. The format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD and constant launch delays have all conspired to dent the public's enthusiasm for high definition on a disc.
